What IF Wednesday: What If I Promised To Take Care of My Health?

Now I know that this isn’t a true What If Wednesday, because DUH it’s Thursday. But, I was planning this post for yesterday, when I was too zonked out and weepy from actually taking care of my health that I was carted away in a little whambulance whenever I sat up and actually attempted to do anything productive.

So, this is the back story: I hate the doctors. Not the way that other people who hate the doctors do, with a total fear of impending doom, but more just a mild dislike. Ever since my favorite doctor quit working in my town, things haven’t been quite the same. And of course, my health insurance is always a mess, which is neither here nor there, but it makes going to the doctors yet even more complicated.

But I go. Faithfully. At least once a year for a check-up.

I get my eyes looked at – mostly because they won’t give me contacts if I don’t. Remember when I tried to pretend I was pregnant so that they would give me contacts without an exam? Yeah, that didn’t work. Shocker.

I get my teeth cleaned, at least once a year, if not every six months, and I got all of my ten zillion fourteen fillings.

But then once day my mouth started to hurt really, kind of badly. And I let it go, because all of my wisdom teeth KILLED when they were growing in, but this one just wouldn’t cut. So, I called my dentist, after a couple month grace period just to make sure I wasn’t making a mountain out of a molehill, and the receptionist was like “no no no, it says here in your file that your wisdom teeth are going to grow in perfectly and there is plenty of room in your mouth, yammer yammer yammer,” to which I replied, “thank you for that but things are NOT alright and I need to be seen ASAP.”

Now, who the heck wants to go to the dentist on their day off? Days off around here are PRECIOUS and few and far between, and the LAST THING IN THE WORLD that I wanted to do on my day off was car myself over to hear that my poor little number 16 wisdom tooth absolutely must be removed. Also the nurse gagged me with a magnet to take the picture of the tooth and I was crying and looked at her with all the authority I could muster and said, “if you shove that down my throat ONE more time, I guarantee that I will vomit on you.” Awesome.

And what I did next was really out of character for me: I did not delay/whine (too much)/try to get around it. There was no getting around it. I do not have dental insurance. The tooth needs to come out. It will be expensive. I am broke, but I’m in pain so it is a priority.

So I called and made an appointment and – voila! One week later I sit here toothless. And $710 poorer.

When I was a teenager, and sexually active, I would tell myself that if I was mature enough to be having sex [I wasn't] then at the VERY least I was mature enough to be going to the doctor regularly and getting the gamut of tests. Going to the doctor is never going to be fun. It is always going to suck at least 40%, but it is just a necessity.

The mentality is this: I could have bought tons of awesome shoes with that $710 dollars, but if you don’t take care of your health and neglect your body’s cues, sooner rather than later, you may not have feet to wear them. It’s can be expensive. It can be terrifying. It can make you feel small and ignorant. BUT you are only given one body in this life, and taking care of if needs to be an absolute priority.

How about you – do you avoid taking care of healthcare related tasks? Why? What step could you take today that would make you feel better?

What a great post! As much as I hate PAYING to go to the doctor, I always always do it. I figure getting checked out regularly or when nothing too serious is going on gives me a chance to catch things early & fix them easier.

I avoid the dentist. I hate getting my teeth cleaned so much so that I’d rather get a friggin’ pap test.

But I have made an appt for next month. I may need to put whiskey on my cheerios that morning.

Oh doll, what a DRAG about the tooth! But, obviously, you did the right thing by your body. I remember that it wasn’t until I got my first apartment by myself and felt like a proper grown-up that I decided I needed to do dental cleanings and physicals regularly. Who else was going to take care of me, if not me?

Boo! I hate going to the doctor too, but I also realize the importance of going. I will probably have to spend $400 for an eye test that I had recently that I’m still wondering if I really needed because I doubt my insurance will cover it. But – like you said – better to be safe than sorry and better to be pain free! Toothaches are the worst! :(

Sorry to hear bout your tooth! Same thing happened to my hubby – he had to have both bottom wisdom teeth cut out and it was NOT pretty. It didn’t help that he’s the biggest baby on the planet either…

I don’t mind going to the doctor, but I hate the dentist and only go when I have too… I raked up $900 worth of dental bills a few years ago fixing my teeth (including a root canal) if it makes you feel better :)

I hate the dentist. But I know how good it feels to spend less than an hour (usually less than half an hour) getting my teeth scraped if I follow the 6-month schedule.

I don’t mind doctors. Not even the GYN, now that I found one I like. But I hate feeling like I’m a hypochondriac when I go in for muscle twinges or sinus headaches.

I feel your pain, girl! I had a wisdom tooth removed last week and it was all kinds of horrible. Luckily, I have one month left of dental insurance so I didn’t have to pay $710 (?!which is ridiculous btw).

I have been very, very bad about going to the dentist. The only reason I went now was because of this tooth. But now that I did it, I feel much better and will be going back for a cleaning and such. I hope you’re tooth hole is healing nicely! lol

I’ve mostly been motivated in my recent barely adult life by impending doom of not having health insurance. Last year I got four wisdom teeth out, went to the lady doc and the eye doc all because I knew I was quitting my job, and in turn, quitting my insurance.
My family is a medical family, so I’ve gotten by in life without having to go to the doctor for most ailments usually. This has kind of spoiled me because now when I have grown up health issues, it takes a LOT of mental energy to actually get to the doctor.

I go to the doctor as often as they tell me I should – and I have several specialists to see on top of my normal gyno, GP, etc. I see the gyno and GP once a year (unless something is wrong) and the specialists twice a year. Dentist twice a year (lately more often because of a tiny dental issue – I still have all of my teeth!) and honestly it has never really occurred to me NOT to go to the doctor regularly. My mom is a nurse and was always on top of the game doctor-wise, so I just grew up with the understanding that medical bills are necessary and going to the doctor is not an option, it is a requirement. I’m always *amazed* when people tell me they don’t even have a GP, or haven’t been to the dentist in two years, or whatever. I would go nuts!

Thank you for the reminder! After several crowns and root canals, I finally have my act together and am taking care of my teeth. However, I haven’t been to a doctor in ages. I’ll make that phone call…

Good for you going to the dentist!

I hate to go to the dentist too. That’s why I’m there every 3 months for a cleaning and look-see. Although you couldn’t head off a big bill for a wisdom tooth with more frequent visits you can head off other things that will cost less if you don’t let them go to the point where they turn into major expenses. It’s also hard to slack off on the self-care – brushing and equally important flossing- if someone is looking you over frequently. If I’m there and they get bleeding gums (what happens if I don’t floss daily) then I have to go back in two weeks to be sure that I’m back on track.

By the way – I’m a cash patient. Every one of those visits is paid for 100% by me.

Why do I bother? Well, have you ever seen anybody with no teeth? It’s not pretty.
