what IF wednesday: the firestarter sessions

by Marzipan on May 19, 2010 · 13 comments

This post could also be titled: What if I Was Able to Support Myself With My Blog and Freelance Writing Gigs? But, I decided to take a different approach on this What If Wednesday by introducing a MAJOR step that I took in the direction of making my What If questions a reality.

Now, this step has two parts. I have started selling two ebooks on this site. The first is A Merry Life Guide to Creating a Better Health Blogremember when I interviewed Mary? Well, her book is AWESOME, and it helped me more to make Medicinal Marzipan what it is than absolutely anything else I tried. Her directions are clear and well written, and I can personally attest to the fact that utilizing her techniques I more than tripled the traffic to this site, enabling me to reach out to a wider array of people, make a lot of fantastic friends, and garnering me opportunities that  I never before thought were possible.

The way that affiliate marketing works, if you are unsure, is that when you buy one of these ebooks from my site, I receive a percentage of the sale. Now, here is my promise to you: I will absolutely never, ever ever, sell anything on this site that I do not 100 % love and believe in, and use in my life – either personally or business related. I like to try new things, and I like to share the excitement and secrets with you all. I like money too, and I would like this site to support itself. These are the most honest statements I can share with you. But I will never sell anything on this site that is stupid, boring, harmful, lame, or unnecessary.

Ok, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way – the second book that I’m selling is something that I have just purchased and just added, Danielle LaPorte‘s The Fire Starter Sessions. And believe me when I tell you, this book is changing not just my blog, but also my life. She is a total genius. And here is my review:

Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions is an absolute must have for anyone who wants to do more with their life, but they are not sure what. Clocking in at 192 pages with a bunch of videos and worksheets, this book is no small joke. I have had it for a week and a half, and I have to force myself to read only portions at a time, so as not to suffer from massive cardiac arrest due to the immediate onset of productivity and excitement. Part life coach and part entrepreneurial Godsend, LaPorte’s words are somehow universally applicable, and her text reads as if it were magically written just for you. She starts her text by stating: We become entrepreneurs because we can’t stand being told what to do. Have you ever felt like that?

I sure know that I have – every single day. I want to make my own rules and tell myself when it’s time to work and when it’s time to play. I want to reap the benefits of my hard-work. I want to work hard, and I want to feel as though I’ve really accomplished something.

I have found that LaPorte’s advice is not only business savvy, but also confidence sky-rocketing. Her personal confidence is so real and overwhelming, you cannot help but getting on board!  Now, if you know me, you know that tips, tricks, books, tools, and videos that inspire confidence in my heart are of the utmost importance for feeding my creative self. The spark of passion and excitement, and that feeling of I-CAN-DO-ABSOLUTELY-ANYTHING is one that I chase with reckless abandon. I love to feel inspired. I love to find new ways to do something that I once thought was impossible.

So now, I say this to you: Get ready marzipanlings, because I am about to go all SUPERNOVA my fire is burning so bright. Within the next year, I will be my own boss. I will set my own hours. And, my entrepreneurial efforts will allow for me to live an abundant and successful life.

Now – caveat – this book is EXPENSIVE. I costs $150 to be exact. And I hope that you will believe me when I tell you that, $150 dollars is not an amount of money that I pay lightly. I hovered with my finger over the BUY NOW button for an entire month. I was afraid. I didn’t have the money. However, I was emboldened by my What IF Challenge. I needed this book. I needed some inspiration. I needed someone (somewhere) to tell me in no uncertain terms that I wasn’t crazy, I was worth everything that my wildest dreams begged for, I was a force to be reckoned with, and that, as long as I was honest to my authentic inner Marzipan, I would succeed. And, I’m not lying when I tell you that it was really, really worth it.

Girl, I can feel your heart pounding through the computer screen…GO FOR IT! Love the review.
I think the point of my comment is that I just want to say I’m oh-so happy that we found each other. In the last few months, I’ve realized the universe is only truly connecting me with people like me: People that kick ass and take names. I’m so glad we’re in the same club of life rockers.

We become entrepreneurs because we can’t stand being told what to do. Have you ever felt like that? – yah you just SCREAMED to me :) Since I was 5 (yes 5!!!) I was going to be an entrepreneur. I saw the magazine in Orange County & asked what an entrepreneur was & from that day forward I knew I would be one one day. I was in the business club in HS, and competed locally & nationally. Went to college & got a business Econ degree and wrote business plans in classes. I then became an accountant and have only recently struggled with my uncomfortableness being a worker bee. I took a profile for the type of worker I am and I was not a team player, I was an idea person, a leader, and this is and has always been a strength for me.

I LOVE that you are setting your intentions. This too is my goal – to be my own boss, create my own companies, and stop limiting myself by titles, organizations, etc. I think I can be a life coach, owner of a non-profit, professional blogger & speaker, and writer of books. I refuse to limit the scope of what I can do. LOVE LOVE this. Tempts me to buy this Firestarter session as a mini life coach to help guide the next year (because I have some BIG things in the pipeline!!!)

Hugs and loves. Wow that was a rant all about me #Selfabsorbedmuch? :)

I’m absolutely loving this book and I think it’s worth the $150! I also took a bit of time debating whether to get it – but it was always on my mind and I think that if you are going into business for yourself, you’re path will definitely require spending money on investments.

There’s a section in the book that talks about money and some of what I took out of that is that you need to invest in the right people when it comes to your business.

This book has rejuvenated me to work on my own business as well (helping small businesses and entrepreneurs with their e-newsletter) and I’m so excited to get it going!!

Also, how awesome is it that there are so many great quotes in this book?? I love collecting quotes so this was the cherry on top for me lol

Mara, I might be interested in joining your Artist’s Way group for this :) Would love to connect with other like-minded folks. (I’ll send you an email)

It’s great to hear that you’ve found the inspiration to pursue the things want in life!

Thank you for the ebook suggestions! “A Merry Life Guide to Creating a Better Health Blog” is basically what I’ve been needing to kick myself into action. I’ve been going back and forth about starting my own blog, and the time has finally come for me to just do it already!

Do it!!!! Seriously, I know you can do this. Supporting yourself through blogging and freelancing is HARD but totally possible. I believe you can do it!

I’m totally saving my pennies for The First Starter Sessions. Once all my big expenses have passed (oh, like in AUGUST!) I will hopefully get to buy it. :)

I recently started the firestarter sessions and well, am looking for a community of folks who are also working through it. I’ve been following the hashtag on twitter but wanted to know if you’ve made any plans to create a group? If so, I’m interested.

I am so happy that I bought the FSS, am working through it slowly, watching the videos several times, savoring the worksheets, and asking one of my five heroes for advice whenever I get stuck. It is a prefect combination of encouragement, passion, and practical stuff to get moving and gain momentum.
