what IF wednesday: AKA marzipan does the bridge pose

by Marzipan on May 12, 2010 · 16 comments

Something sort of humorous is happening here today at Medicinal Marzipan. Remember two days ago when I blogged honestly about how I eat french fries, never exercise, and think my personal definition of healthy living is loving your body regardless of where it falls on the weight/fitness spectrum? Well I totally forgot when I was writing that post that today was my turn to exhibit a pose for Carrot ‘N’ Cake’s Yoga Pose May. Hilarious! The reality is, while I don’t practice as much as I wish I did, I do LOVE yoga. It is by far my absolute favorite form of exercise: it’s low impact, easily portable, and no other type of exercise makes my body feel stretched and awesome quite like yoga does. I attribute my love of both yoga and carrot juice to the amount of time I spent playing idly in the corner while my mom took yoga classes when I was just a baby Marzipanling.

The what if – ing…

Remember how every Wednesday I post a “What If?” as a part of Fitarella’s What if challenge? And one of my initial what ifs was: What if I celebrated my love of my body by eating intuitively and implementing an exercise routine? YES. Well, my loves, it is all coming together. Let me tell you. And while I am a far cry from starting to record my work-outs with expensive and complicated programs and systems, I am starting to work out a little bit more than I was before. Mostly what it boils down to is: I need more energy. I’ve been feeling tired. And slow. And sluggish. It’s spring now (most days), and I want to celebrate the beautiful weather by being more active. [I may or may not have also started the couch to 5k program this week, but that is a story for another post.]

The Yoga Pose May – ing…

The bridge pose is one of my very favorites, as it both strengthens your lower back (making it easier to stand up straight AND for your body to support your boobs – CRUCIAL if you are a large-chested lady), while also toning your legs, hips, and lower abdomen. It is a great for: stress relief, stretching your back, massaging your internal organs, reducing menstrual discomfort, improving digestion, and eradicating fatigue. I often save this pose for the very end of my practice, and counter-balance it with either the happy baby pose or the cobra pose, for all-over strength building and stretching.

The Bridge Pose
  1. lie on your back with your feet firmly planted, shoulder blades on the mat, and your hands on the floor palm down at your side, or clasped beneath your body if you’re fancy.
  2. EXHALE, pressing your arms and feet into the floor, and lift your butt off the floor. Bonus points: while you are doing this, actively tighten your legs, inner thighs, butt, and stomach, to pull your hips a little closer to towards the ceiling. [knees should be directly over heels, and your head flat against the ground. If this is uncomfortable, tuck your chin a little towards your chest]
  3. Stay in the pose for 30 seconds – 1 minute, holding your body firm. Don’t forget to breathe!!!
  4. Lower your butt to the floor. Breathe.

Marzipan Bridge Variation:

  • Want to kick this pose up a notch by doing it in butt-boosting, thigh-loving sets?
  • Begin with your feet together on the mat, complete steps 1-3. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 3x.
  • Move your feet to hip width apart on the mat (keeping your knees over heels), complete steps 1-3. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 3x.
  • Move your feet so that they are wider apart than hip width – or at about the edges of your mat. Complete steps 1-3. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 3x.

So here we go: What if I celebrated my body by eating intuitively and implementing an exercise routine in my life? What if I starting moving my body more regularly and with intent? What if I had so much energy that I could work double shifts everyday and still have time to love up this blog regularly? What if moving my body helped me to feel more at home in my skin? What if I kicked ass and ran a 5k – for the first time in my life? What if I followed through with my goals, because my body is the only one I’ll ever have and I want to love it into its absolute best potential?

I think I’ll do exactly that.

What about you marzipanlings? Do you find that exercise helps you build a positive relationship with your body? Do you do yoga? What’s YOUR favorite pose?

xoxox.

Exercise has totally helped me build a positive relationship with my body. I am so proud of my body every time I reach a new fitness goal.

As far as yoga, I have done it a handful of times. I do like it but I don’t do it too often cause I’m busy with my obsession with more high impact stuff and strength training right now. It is a nice recovery day form of movement though.

I have been doing TONS of prenatal yoga and it has been awesome! I also get a lot in via Wii Active because it is still so stinking cold out! My little four year old’s FAVORITE pose happens to be the bridge pose and she is a pro!

The main reason I like yoga is because it makes me feel connected to myself, mind and body.

Exercise definitely helps me love and appreciate my body. I have done so many things that I used to believe I couldn’t do. It makes me believe in myself and my abilities. I no longer doubt myself. There’s nothing that I can’t do. It’s amazing. I have learned to branch out of my little box, to try new things. I’m going to try Bikram yoga soon and I’m going to the gym to write down the class schedules. I have never done a class at the gym so it’s time to branch out!

Yay team Bridge! I like that you showed the steps in photos. I contemplated it, but went for less photos of me in spandex. :) Happy to find a new blog to read!

I’m not a yoga person. I’m a stand in one place, lift heavy things over and over person. That said, my trainer does occasionally force me into yoga positions like the Bridge and the one where you’ve got one leg crossed over the other and you’re balancing on one hand and lifting the other and then you fall down.

I’m not, you see, a yoga person.

You have, by the way, remarkable calves. They’re made for knee-length skirts.
