have mat, will travel

So, for those of you who are new readers here, and I know there are a few, WELCOME! I am very excited to have you, and envision this blog to be like a really comfortable living room where people are settled into big deluxe armchairs with cups of steaming coffee and having delicious conversations about body image and learning to love yourself better. [You know - similar to what I imagine my happiest safe space to look exactly like. Ha.] So, please, kick back, read a little, and let me know what you think. I love comments and emails from readers, particularly if you have a topic that you really wish that I would discuss here. If you want my attention, find me on twitter @mmarzipan or email me at medicinalmarzipan @ gmail.com

During the month of March I pledged to do yoga every single day, after having acknowledged that I needed to get moving in order to a) strengthen my mind/body relationship and b) get out of the winter rut of eating comfort food and wearing sweatsuits everyday. And it was AWESOME. I never done anything quite like it, and found that it really allowed me to feel so much better to have a goal and be physically active in a way that I could take with me wherever I went.

Because I have been traveling since December. And I am not the type of girl who does well without a routine.

So I pledged that no matter how crazy or stressed or overworked or sore I was, I committed to at least 15 minutes of yoga per day. I soon realized however, that I liked it so much I was HAPPILY doing far more than 15 minutes, and it felt so satisfying to invest myself in an endeavor that was really, solely, just for my happiness and well-being.

I am on the road again, having left Puerto Rico and returned to Florida to scoop up my car, Mary Ellen, and drive back up the coast to my home on Cape Cod for the summer. It has been a fantastic trip thus far, but, as always seems to be the case when traveling so much, I have been eating a TON of food that is really bad for me and haven’t been very active.

When you are the type of person who struggles with body image and compulsive eating, this type of traveling can be really taxing, and can leave you feeling ultimately both uncomfortable and out-of-sorts. While I was in Puerto Rico, I purchased a new yoga mat for myself.  A Manduka, the alleged Cadillac of yoga mats. And, boy, do I recommend it. It is like doing yoga on a beautifully colored cloud of bliss.

So, now as I travel up the coast, I have my yoga mat in tow and am committing myself to work out between fun activities, so that I can keep up with some sort of activity and thus ease the strain of eating ice cream sundaes everyday. Best of both worlds.

How do you stay active when you’re traveling? Do you find that it helps?

I love yoga so I always bring my yoga mat along when I travel. I especially love practicing on vacation because it just feels so good to know that I am making the choice, even on vacation, to move my body in a way that feels joyful to me.

My mat is a beinjoy and I love it so much. I had a jade before but it dried out :(

    hi “marzipan”!

been reading your blog after a cue from e.m. – love it!
i find that yoga in particular is not only good for traveling, but also body image, self-confidence, self-empowerment, spiritual health, and overall well-being. i’ve been doing hot yoga a few times a week at a local studio and it’s been a delicious, triple-decker physical-emotional-spiritual health sandwich.
i’m going through a lot of life changes at the moment and am about to do a lot of traveling in the next month, so this blog post couldn’t have been more timely. i’ll make sure to take my mat with me while enjoying delicious meals with family and friends over the next few weeks. thank you, and keep in touch :)
