marzipan LOVES: green smoothies

green smoothieI am obsessed with green smoothies. OBSESSED. There is literally nothing that makes me feel better in the morning. I have quit my coffee dependence! And for those of you who know me, you will know that is a pretty absurd and phenomenal feat, because there was nothing that I used to love more than coffee. Don’t get me wrong – a large ice coffee with two splendas still makes my heart tingle a little bit, but the amazing part is that I have trained myself to stop thinking about coffee immediately upon waking. And more importantly – it has become possible to move from bed to car to job before even drinking a single drop, though I am finding that I am still struggling a little with talking pre-coffee to anyone in particular. 

I have also quit smoking cigarettes. And this is way more exciting, because no matter how awful it is, I did (do) love to smoke. So, long story short, I am having lots of energy and am very excited about it all! 

Thus, I wanted to share my green smoothie recipe with you, because if your August is shaping up to be as busy as mine, you might need the extra energy too:

Need: 

  • greens (my favorites right now are kale and collard greens, but spinach or beet greens or anything of that type works too) Tip: Spinach nuances the taste of the smoothie the LEAST so this may be best for newbies.
  • fruit (love love love blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, mango, but whatever you like will work) Tip: Watermelon is super refreshing in the summer!
  • greek yogurt of any flavor (optional, but delicious)
  • flax pax (portable flax seed packs sold in sets of 12 at your local grocery/health food store)
  • coconut water, unsweetened is best

Then:

  1. put items in blender from heartiest to the lightest, aka greens at the bottom, yogurt at the top. 
  2. make sure there is enough liquid.
  3. BLEND until very smooth
  4. enjoy/floss (?) – I always get greens in my teeth during this step of the process, and thus, now carry floss with me everywhere
