I have VERY EXCITING NEWS. Here at medicinal marzipan, I have been dreaming and stewing on new and fantastic ways that we can learn how to love ourselves better, and honor our bodies more – exactly as they are. Therefore, I am I am incredibly pleased to introduce Body Lovin’ Homework, a new weekly addition to the blog here.

Every week I will give you all a homework assignment, one or more writing prompts that are intended to be completed without self-criticism or doubt, within the time period of one hour.  Some will be free-writing assignments where I will ask you to keep your pen moving for a determined period of time, recording every thought that enters your mind, no matter how trivial or absurd. Some will be more clear cut.

I will create a page on the blog here that will also serve to keep track of assignments, so you can start at any time and catch up with us or revisit old assignments to do them again. I also hope that this page can serve as a forum for sharing responses to assignments. I will share mine there, and invite you to do the same, if and when you are comfortable.

But mostly I hope we can all support one another with love and hope for building better body image and a community of self love, so that we will all be able to move with greater ease around every aspect of our lives.

ASSIGNMENT FOR WEEK ONE: Free-write for twenty minutes each on these two prompts, 1) My body feels… 2) My body was built for…. Free writing (also called stream-of-consciousness writing) is a form of writing where a person writes continuously for a set period of time,  disregarding spelling, grammar, or topic. It often produces raw material which may not always make sense, but can help you overcome self-criticism or doubt.

YAY! Email me at medicinalmarzipan@gmail.com with any and all questions/comments/concerns or if you feel like you want to share with someone, but don’t want your work posted here.

Wow. Your responses were brilliantly written. They told so much about you.

My responses were just a list of words. I’m still warming up to this process, apparently.

Loved this video! I just found your blog through Healthy Living Blogs, and to be totally honest I’ve never read a new blog as a result of the HLB but I was intrigued after finding out you are getting your MSW. I got my MSW degree a couple years ago and now I’m working in Chicago’s inner city schools. I look forward to following your blog!

I just found your blog and it honestly could not have come at a better time. I struggle with self-acceptance, self-confidence and self-love and your blog makes me feel strong, confident and able! I just wrote my first response to week one of body lovin’ homework. Wow! It felt great to write! Although it wasn’t all positive, it felt great to just get it out there (typing 1,000 words a minute trying to get all my thoughts out!) and ended on a very uplifting, positive note! I plan to do all of your prompts and look forward to getting to know myself better though my own words (sounds silly, I know!) Thank you!

Thanks Kristen! That is so lovely to hear, and I’m glad that you’ve started the body lovin’ homework – it helps. I promise. Nothing I write is ever all positive, but I mostly try to focus on not censoring myself and just giving myself the space to be negative if that’s how I’m feeling. And by the way, that does not sound silly at all! Getting to know myself through writing was one of the best things I’ve ever spent time doing. xoxo

Wow! This is so revolutionary for me. My answer to “My body feels….” was “nothing.” My weight is such an issue that it paralyzes me. Well, my thoughts paralyze me. The “my body was made for….” was a lot more fun. It was a grand brainstorm full of possibility. You’re really wonderful to be doing this. I was kind of arrested by seeing/listening to your open and heartfelt responses.

Caroline, I’m glad that you’re having a good experience with the questions! It can be weird/hard to realize what your immediate reactions to the prompts are.. I know that for myself, sometimes I find myself shocked by my gut response. I’m glad that the second prompt was fun for you. Let me know if you need any help! xoxo

i just found this today and just wrote these out. That they are so unexpected seems like a sign that they were needed today. Thank you so much for this!

Hello there, I am new here, just found this today actually. I’m definitely going to do this.
I’m 17 years old and all my life I have dealt with self-loathing, and as I have grown I have become so much better, but you know there are still those days you wake up and your like, why the hell do I even live, BLEH. But, I’ve been really working at it. Finding this now, I think would be wonderful. I’m very excited to do it! Not only do I love writing, but it has always been a sort of comfort, and one of the only pure ways for me to express myself. So, I can’t wait to get to writing!

By the way, you write beautifully. I don’t think I could come up with so many adjectives or have such vivid vocabulary if I was writing raw.

Hi Lex – Thanks so much for commenting! I love knowing that people are thinking about embarking on the body loving homework. Please please please let me know if you have any questions or if you just want to shoot some of your writing my way, I’d love to read it : ) This process was really powerful for me, and though I haven’t revisited it in a while now, I’m quietly working on creating an ebook/ecourse for the homework…. with more prompts, reader responses, and support communities :) keep in touch! xo
